Digitalization: borderless, relentless, and apolitical
Christopher Jablonski, Director, CXO REvolutionaries & Community, Zscaler

This year, we’ll see over 80 elections take place worldwide affecting more than half of the global population. Sweeping changes on one side of the world will ricochet into others, reminding us of how interconnected we are despite the second-guessing of some aspects of globalization in recent years.

The digitization of civilization will only accelerate in the face of potential disruptions in global trade, politics, regulation, and migration. According to TeleGeography, a research firm, over half a thousand active or planned subsea cables are handling international bandwidth demand that has grown to 3,800 terabits per second since 2019. That’s a lot of traffic that needs securing.

This newsletter also has a global footprint to reflect our global activities. We do our best to provide valuable perspectives on security and IT transformation that are almost always universal and, as often as possible, regional. For instance, Zscaler CISO in Residence Heng Mok, has a dispatch from Australia in the next story below. In Mumbai next month, you’ll hear from Zscaler executives like CTO Syam Nair at the Global IT Leadership Summit. And in March, the CXO Exchange comes to Amsterdam with an EMEA perspective to familiar challenges CXOs face wherever they happen to be based.

We cordially invite you to join us in person for these events and the many others Zscaler has in store for 2024. Happy New Year.

From the Office of the CISO:
To meet bold ambitions and combat mounting threats, Australia endorses zero trust
Heng Mok, CISO in Residence, Zscaler
If Australia is to become the most cyber-secure nation in the world by 2030, as Cyber Security Minister Clare O'Neill has said it can be, it has a ways to go. The Australian government’s recognition of this fact can be seen in two recent reports highlighting the need for cyber readiness in an era of heightened tension.

First came a report from the Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC) calling for "greater organisational vigilance to combat cyber threats."  It followed a survey in which respondents voluntarily ranked their organisation according to its cyber maturity, returning a weighted average of 1.6 on a scale from 0-4.

Given the source of the study and the (self-reported) poor performance of participating organizations, some CISOs are bracing for similar legislation as that from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, which has preoccupied their American counterparts for months. It would certainly follow a pattern of close involvement by the Australian government in cyber-related matters, especially in the wake of a breach.

How Australia can respond to a perfect storm of circumstances.

In early development models like Waterfall, a high wall separated build teams and run teams, development code and object code. Then came the Agile Revolution in recognition that these processes were too long, their scopes too siloed, and punting the code over the wall for someone else to deal with was...kind of wrong.
How CI/CD helps CXOs build security into the business
Board members that help advise an organization to execute a cybersecurity transformation may encounter obstacles, similar to a board's oversight on other major change initiatives. These common challenges, if not addressed at the board level, can derail the organization’s time-to-value on cyber-related efforts.
Transcending challenges to achieve change
Managing cyber risk is a continuous journey that requires fine-tuning as the organization changes, the threat landscape evolves, business needs change, etc. Moving towards zero trust is a big step toward the minimization of cyber risk, but it is not a one-and-done process.
